Dear Sugar & Spice ... I've been dating a guy for about six months and I know it's not that long, but I think it could turn out to be serious. The only thing I have a problem with is that his parents don't speak English. When I visit with them, we just look at each other. It's kind of weird not being able to talk with them. I'm just worried that will be a problem later on. What do you think and is there anything I can do?

Problem? I don't see a problem. You finally have a valid reason NOT to speak to a potential future mother-in-law. There are tons of women who would kill to be so lucky. Joking aside, you should have your Latin lover teach you some Spanish so you can establish a rapport with his parents -- assuming you are serious about him. You'll earn points with him and his parents just for trying! His parents are probably just as uncomfortable with you as you're with them. So ease his parents into loving you, by showing you care enough to learn some key phrases like ''back off momma'' or ''your son is a lying cheat''. One can never be too prepared just in case things head south. And the lesson after language is cultural nuisances since these are bound to trip you up around the holidays especially when dealing with different types of food.

Learn to speak Spanish. It's really that simple. If this relationship is important to you, then it's the least you can do. It will certainly take you a while, but this is a case where actions speak louder than words. Once his parents see that you're making an effort to learn to speak Spanish, they'll probably help you along, and they may even make an effort to learn English with your help. Plus it's a nice deposit in the goodwill account. Your boyfriend would like that, and it could put you further on the path to the long-lasting relationship you want. Besides, the more you're around his family, the more you'll want to know what they're saying about you anyway, so you really can't lose.
